Press Release Body: The old legend of what is known in Ireland as the "banshee" is
still in many parts of the country regarded not as a legend at all, but actual fact.
Many old Irish folk stories and ballads refer to the creature, for that is what it
can only be described.
The wail of the banshee, if heard by anybody, signifies an imminent death in the
family of that person. The wail is never heard by the person who will die. The
banshee is seen in the shape of a woman in black with the head of a turkey or
variously some other bird or animal. This is taken to mean that the soul of the
person to die will be eternally doomed to Hell. The banshee will also appear as a
beautiful young lady in a white dress which according to legend, means that the
person going to die will go to eternal glory with God.
Often, however, the banshee is heard and not seen at all and nobody seems sure
whether that was a good or bad sign.
The wail or appearance of the banshee always happens at the midnight hour the day
before the unfortunate soul is taken from this Earth. The sound is reputed to be a
mixture of the howling of a fox and the cry of a baby. Older people who claim to
have heard it say that there is no earthly sound like it. It would make the hair
stand on the back of your head, they state.
The younger generation in Ireland would of course dismiss such stories out of hand,
but there still are in modern Ireland many reports of the appearance and the awful
wail of the banshee being heard by members of a family and the subsequent death of
one of their own.
So, sleep well tonight and if you do not hear the terrifying sound of the banshee...
Well, it could be your turn!
